I e-mailed the Irish embassy in Budapest to express my disappointment over our ambassador's not being included among the representatives of Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States in issuing a statement of support for the upcoming pride parade in Hungary's capital.

Thank you for your email of 31 August 2009 to the Embassy of Ireland in respect of the upcoming Gay Pride Parade in Budapest. For reasons of timing, it was not possible for us to associate ourselves with the statement made by a number of other Embassies in Budapest before the text issued on 28 August. We of course share our colleagues' hope that this weekend's march will be allowed to proceed peacefully and not be marred by the violence seen in recent years.

I'm glad to hear the Irish embassy supports the rights and dignity of those in Budapest. Also happy to know that it was just logistics, rather than deliberate avoidance or ignorance, that's behind Ireland's absence among the list of countries issuing that joint statement.
